Subject Specialism

Mathematics and Physics

A subject profile focused on school mathematics and science, advanced mathematical study, physics and engineering mathematics education.

My subject specialism is Mathematics and Physics, with a strong academic foundation in applied mathematics, mathematical physics and scientific modelling. I am interested in helping students see mathematics not only as a set of procedures, but as a structured language for reasoning, modelling and understanding the physical world.

Mathematics teaching

My mathematics teaching experience includes KS3 and KS4 Mathematics, GCSE Foundation and Higher preparation, small-group support, tutoring and undergraduate/foundation mathematics teaching.

  • number, factors, multiples, powers, roots, prime factorisation and exact arithmetic
  • fractions, decimals, percentages, FDP conversion, percentage change and multipliers
  • ratio, proportion, direct proportion, unitary method and scale reasoning
  • algebraic manipulation, solving equations and equations involving powers and roots
  • geometry including angles in parallel lines, circumference, area, Pythagoras and proof-oriented reasoning
  • statistics and probability including averages, range, mode, median, pie charts, scatter graphs, stem-and-leaf diagrams and probability models
  • mathematical reasoning, problem-solving and preparation for advanced study

Physics and science teaching

My Science teaching experience includes KS3 Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with particular interest in Physics and the mathematical structure of scientific ideas. Areas taught or supported include forces, energy stores, sound, light, the particle model, chemical changes, polymers, biological organisation and tissues.

Sixth-form and advanced mathematics

I am particularly interested in teaching and developing further in A-level Mathematics, A-level Further Mathematics and Physics. My academic background places me in a strong position to contribute to A-level Mathematics and, where appropriate, Further Mathematics content including Pure Mathematics, Core Pure and Mechanics, especially through calculus, differential equations, vectors, complex numbers, mathematical modelling, numerical methods and mathematical physics.

University and engineering mathematics education

I have experience teaching university-level and foundation mathematics, including international engineering students and undergraduate learners. This has included designing instructional materials, using applied examples, and helping students connect abstract mathematical structures to physical and engineering contexts.

Supporting student progress

I support student progress by identifying prerequisite knowledge before introducing new concepts, using worked examples to reduce unnecessary cognitive load, checking for understanding through questioning and mini-whiteboards, addressing misconceptions explicitly, building fluency before moving to problem-solving, and using scaffolding without lowering expectations.

Enrichment and mathematical challenge

I am interested in supporting mathematical enrichment through UKMT-style problem-solving, including preparation for Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges, and progression towards Kangaroo, Junior Mathematical Olympiad, British Mathematical Olympiad and wider Olympiad-style pathways where appropriate. My focus would be on enrichment, reasoning, resilience and long-term confidence-building rather than on unsupported claims about competition outcomes.
